Alecia Achimovich ’16

Dr. Alecia Achimovich (BMB ’16) joined the Gettysburg College Chemistry Department faculty with a one-year appointment as a visiting assistant professor for the 2022-2023 academic year.  In 2023, she agreed to continue teaching for a second year so she will be with us through Spring 2024.  We’re glad Alecia decided to stick around!

Stephen Brown (BMB ’17) was a co-author on a paper, entitled “Boosting neuregulin 1 type-III expression hastens SMA motor axon maturation”, published by Acta Neuropathologica Communications in March 2023.

Maureen Miller Elliott
(BMB ‘99) faithfully shares her annual Christmas letter with those of us in the BMB program.  We enjoy hearing about her career and family adventures.  She lives in the Colorado mountains with her 3 active children and assorted pets.  Maureen and family attended two conferences focused on Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC).  Maureen participated in a panel at one of the conferences, presenting to 200 genetic researchers studying TSC.  The family took a hiking vacation through Arches National Park and the Canyonlands.  In 2022, Maureen started a full-time teaching job at a new high school near her home where she teaches Honors Chemistry and Biology.  An avid runner, Maureen participated in triathlons, a sprint race and competed in two half-marathons, one on snowy mountain trails.  She also coached a Mom’s running group for a Mother’s Day 5K.

Dr. Kaytie Innamorati
(BMB ’14) successfully defended her dissertation in April 2021.  She studied comparative genomics of mucosal bacterial pathogens at Drexel University College of Medicine.  She has since accepted a position as a researcher and instructor in the Drexel Department of Microbiology and Immunology.  Kaytie recently broke records for running a half marathon dressed as a witch and is training for future marathon and Ironman events.

Julie Laudenschlager ’16

Dr. Julie Laudenschlager (BMB ’16) joined the Gettysburg College Chemistry Department faculty with a one-year appointment as a visiting assistant professor for the 2023-2024 academic year. Julie recently accepted a new position, starting this Summer 2024,  as a Lecturer in the Chemistry Department at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Jordon Markle (BMB ’22) is currently a second-year PhD student in the Pielak Lab at UNC Chapel Hill. Her graduate work aims to understand the effects of macromolecular crowding on protein stability using NMR spectroscopy. For further updates from Jordon, see the article in this newsletter about some of our BMB Award Winners.

Dr. Madison Strine (BMB ’18) is currently working with Dr. Liza Konnikova as a Yale School of Medicine Science Fellow, studying mucosal immunology at the fetal-maternal interface. For further updates from Maddie see the article in this newsletter about some of our BMB Award Winners.

Dr. Carly Strelez ’14

Dr. Carly Strelez (BMB ‘14) commented on the topic of purpose in the Gettysburg College Magazine Summer 2022 edition. She now works at The Lawrence J. Ellison Institute for Transformative Medicine, Los Angeles, CA, serving as Manager of the Organ-on-a-Chip Team working on an organ-on-chip model of colorectal cancer to understand how the tumor microenvironment influences early metastatic spread.  See Carly’s Ellison Institute profile here.
