Visiting Speakers

Nathan Wittenberg
Nathan Wittenberg

We kicked off the fall of 2022 with a visit by Nathan Wittenberg from the Department of Chemistry at Lehigh University. He presented his lab’s work on “Model Membrane Systems: Consequences of Lipid Oxidation, Analysis of Biomolecular Interactions, and High-Density Nanoarrays.”

René Fuanta

In the spring of 2023, we started the semester with a seminar by René Fuanta, an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry at East Stroudsburg University. He told us about his work on “Screening marine-derived compounds as potential inhibitors of key bacterial enzymes and pathogens.”

Jon Hibshman
Jon Hibshman ’12

Our next seminar was by BMB alum, Jon Hibshman (’12), who spoke about some of his work as a postdoc at UNC Chapel Hill titled: “Desiccation tolerance: adaptation for survival in the face of extremes.”

The Musselman Visiting Scientist hosted by the Chemistry department in the spring also featured a BMB friendly series of lectures by Andy Borovik from UC Irvine.

Professor Frey and family in Korea
Shelli Frey and family in Korea

In the fall of 2023, our first seminar was given by our recently returning chair, Shelli Frey, on her sabbatical work both in Gettysburg and Korea. The title was: “Proteins & Detergents & Nanoparticles – oh my! Research Sabbatical Adventures in Membrane Biophysics.”

Our second seminar was given by Carol Manhart, Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Temple University on her lab’s work on “DNA spellchecking and the mechanisms and dynamics of the MutL endonuclease.”

Upcoming Events
This spring we have Ryan Kerney from Gettysburg, Esther Braselmann from Georgetown, and Sarah Michel from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy slated for seminars. Please visit our events webpage for more details of these and other upcoming speakers.  You are welcome to join us!
